My Story
The call to priesthood has always been there for me, even if I did not know it. Growing up, my younger brother and I would sit in the downstairs bathroom giving each other soup crackers as if they were the Body of Christ my parents received at Sunday mass.
My religious background was strong because my family went to weekly mass and after confirmation I started receiving the sacraments regularly. Some years passed and I found myself in high school. High school really tested my faith. I had an opportunity to play hockey in Omaha my junior year of high school; going away from home definitely had its positives and negatives. Hockey was my passion ever since I was 5 years old, and now I had the chance to “live the dream”. In between my junior and senior year I had one of the biggest decisions of my life, to come back to St. Mary’s and graduate, or pursue the hockey career which I had laid out for me. God had a big hand in all of this and made the decision clear that I was to come back to Bismarck for my senior year. During this year the call to the priesthood was especially strong the 2nd semester when I had “The Catholic Disciple” class with Father Josh Waltz. Another big decision came earlier this summer when I still had the opportunity to play hockey for many teams, or follow God’s call to seminary. I chose to follow in the footsteps of my patron saint, Saint Peter. I gave up my love for hockey and my girlfriend for almost two years to follow God’s call to “Drop the nets and follow Christ” just as Saint Peter did.
